The Power of Thanks

3 o'clock wake up callGive thanks to God in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

I’m fascinated by the scientific research coming out about the power of giving thanks to God every day.  My collection of articles and stories on the topic seems to be growing almost daily.  Here’s a couple of recent stories I’ve found.

Deborah Norville, in her New York Times bestseller Thank You Power, describes years of debilitating migraine headaches only minimally relieved with common medical treatments. Intrigued by the science of gratitude, she began the daily practice of writing down the things she was thankful for. With this habit as the only change to her treatment regimen, she began to notice that her migraines almost completely disappeared.

I also read an article in Guideposts by Rick Hamlin, an executive editor who sunk into a devastating depression after a successful surgery.  He could not climb out of his pit of “godless despair” no matter how hard he tried or how many people tried to help him.  Finally, what stopped the darkness was writing Thank You Notes.  Yes, he wrote seventy-five notes of gratitude to people who had cared for him, sent him gifts, brought him food, or even written notes to him.  He attributes his mental healing to writing down his gratitude, even in the worst of times.  Giving thanks is what ultimately lifted him back up.

How have you seen giving thanks to God positively impact your life?  When your 3pm alarm sounds, does gratitude lift your mood?  Has thanksgiving taken root in your heart to the point where you find yourself giving thanks to God more often now?

God is so pleased when His children turn to Him and give Him thanks for the good things in their lives.  He is the giver of all good things.  (James 1:17) God is also delighted when we turn to Him when our circumstances are bleak and darkness is consuming us.  When we choose to keep thanking and praising Him even in the worst of times, God is close to comfort us and lift us up in due time. (1 Peter 5:6)

No matter what circumstances you face, giving God thanks is a great option. Gratitude has the tremendous power to positively change your day… and your life.
