Rejoice and Be Glad In It

Let us rejoice today and be glad. – Psalm 118:24

My favorite time to be with God is early in the morning, before my family wakes up and the busyness of the day begins.  It’s amazing how as few as fifteen minutes alone with God lifts my heart and positively impacts the rest of the day: I’m able to be rejoice and be glad in it.

Do you practice a “quiet time” with God every day?  When is the best time of the day for you to focus on God’s presence and enjoy your time together?

Several people have asked me what a “quiet time” looks like.  So I asked several women, many wiser than me, to share what they do when they meet alone with God.  Here are some creative ways that work for women longing to know God more and experience His presence and hear His voice.

  • Coffee in one hand and the Bible in the other, she reads a chapter in Proverbs a day.  There are 31 Proverbs, one for each day of the month.  Wisdom in small doses.

  • She reads Jesus Calling by Sarah Young.  The daily devotional is written as if Jesus were talking to you directly.

  • Reading the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, one at a time helped my friend learn how Jesus talked and walked.  She got to know God intimately by studying His son.

  • Through an online Bible Study, she follows the teaching and fills out the “homework” everyday.  Daily accountability increases her Biblical understanding.

  • She’s read through the Chronological Bible three times now because having a structured plan keeps her on track.  She enjoys piecing together history with the Bible stories.

  • Hiking on a mountain trail or taking the dog for a walk is the time she prays and asks God to work in her life.  His closeness is best experienced outdoors.

  • A weekly breakfast with a small group of women is her time to ask questions and learn more about God from others who have gone before her.

  • Quietly she prays with a pen in hand.  She asks God specific questions then she waits for the Holy Spirit’s prompting in her heart to move the pen across the page.  She has piles of journals filled with God’s blessings and answered prayers.

No matter what your time with God looks like, having a plan that you can consistently keep is key to growing closer to Him.  It’s like any other relationship in our life, depth of intimacy grows by spending time together.
