The New Thing

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  See, I am doing a new thing!” says the LORD. – Isaiah 43:18-19

Do you like to try new things?  Are you adventurous and get excited when your schedule or daily routine gets shook up and changed?

I notice that change throws some people off.  My kids hate it when I rearrange the kitchen and switch things around.   They all found it extremely frustrating when the “the junk drawer” now holds the napkins.

Some people thrive with predictable daily patterns.  I have a family member that plans holidays and birthdays way in advance because she loves to know what the future holds.

Not me.  I’ve had to learn to live with constant change in my life and marriage.  For more than twenty years, my husband, Dan has never had a predictable or consistent work schedule.  I can never plan “family dinners every Sunday night” because it’s like throwing dice, maybe he’s home for dinner, or he’s sleeping because he worked a night shift, or he’s traveling out of state.  No week or month looks the same.  The only consistency in our schedule is change.

God’s word tells us to expect change because He continually does “new things” in our lives.  When Isaiah, one of God’s greatest prophets penned the verse above, he was on a mission to wake the Israelites from their spiritual slumber.

Although God had previously saved the Israelites from their enemies in miraculous ways, such as parting the Red Sea to allow their escape from slavery, they had begun to harden their hearts towards Him.  Isaiah was reminding them to continue to look to God, for He would eventually be doing “new things” for their salvation.

We can do the same.  When “new things” appear in your life, look for God’s hand at work.
