I call out to the LORD, and He answers me.
– Psalm 3:4
Have you ever received a phone call that changed the trajectory of your life? A call with a new job offer that moves you across the country. A call from a first date that eventually leads to a lifelong commitment. A call from the police that takes your breath away.
Fifteen years ago, when I received a call from a pastor friend asking me to take over her high school ministry position while she went on sabbatical, my first thought was that she’d dialed the wrong number. Looking back, though, I think that call came directly from heaven. It was as if the voice of God spoke through the phone to tell me exactly what my next steps were to be.
When the call came, I was in our upstairs bathroom in Worcester, Massachusetts bathing our two small children. We spoke for only a few minutes but when I hung up the phone and looked at myself in the mirror, I knew the direction of my life was about to drastically change.
Being a third generation public school teacher, I believed my destiny had already been etched in stone. The plan had always been to stay home with the kids while they were young, then go back to teaching full time when they were in elementary school. Teaching was my first love.
When I started the High School Ministry job, I quickly fell in love with both the teenagers and with teaching the Bible. (Many of them knew more about the Bible then I did, at that point). This spurred me on to ask them challenging questions and forced my nose into a book that I’d always found “over my head.”
After my short stint as a “pastor,” God stirred in me a deep desire to know Him more. When we moved to Boulder in 2005, I quickly signed up for a Bible Study at a local church. Out of that Study, God gave me some of my closest friends and called me to what I am doing today.
I didn’t go back to teaching in public schools. Instead, I began to teach in churches. This path has been so different from what I’d imagined it would be. But knowing that God is calling, and that I am following, makes this life an exciting adventure.
Jesus is calling you, too.
- Are you hurting from wounds from the past? Jesus is calling you to come close and be healed.
- Have you come to the end of your rope? Jesus is calling you to reach out and take His hand.
- Are you empty and wondering if there’s more? Jesus is calling you into a deeper friendship with Him.
Jesus is calling. Every day when your 3 o’clock alarm sounds, Jesus is calling you to look up, give thanks, and trust Him with your heart. Walk with Him, talk with Him, love Him, and trust Him to guide you into His great plans for you.
You might be right in the center of God’s call for your life. That’s awesome, rejoice! Or you may be drifting, wondering, questioning, and doubting. If so, then ask Jesus to lead you toward your calling.
Exciting adventures await. Jesus is calling. Will you answer your call from heaven?
